How do I trade? it makes my game crash everytime

do I have to beat the elite four to unlock trading, or something?
whenever I talk to the lady in the "wireless communication Depot", the game saves, then crashes. then when I open the game it'll crash again, making it impossible to continue playing the game. I've tried it twice.
yet I see other people are somehow trading.. can someone tell me how they did it?
